Stage 11

Stage 11 of the Monmouthshire Way closes the circular route around Monmouthshire and returns to Chepstow. Having crossed the A48, the route will head to Slade via Carrow Hill. A pleasant descent from the woods takes the route past the Rogiet Windmill and shortly later arrives at the village.

Leaving Rogiet, the Monmouthshire Way crosses the M4 and mainline from London to Swansea and the Wales Coast Path is then joined and followed east to Chepstow. On route the Monmouthshire Way passes underneath the Second Severn Crossing and reaches the Severn Tunnel pumping station at Sudbrook and later to Mathern. Mathern is famous due to its historical links to St Tewdric. It was here that he died following a battle with the Saxons. He had been wounded at Tintern and his wounds were washed at the spring in the village. Here he died and the site is now a Holy Well. From Mathern, the final leg of the Monmouthshire Way follows the River Wye through woods to arrive in Chepstow where the journey started.
